Hear From Current Apprentices

DC HEAL apprentices are navigating the transition from education to careers with clear growth and professional readiness. Their experiences show what it takes to enter—and succeed in—a demanding field while building a long-term future. DC HEAL is not just placing individuals in jobs; it’s supporting career pathways. Apprentices take ownership of their development and contribute meaningfully in real health care settings while building the skills to advance.

Jonathan Tejada-Flores, Health Information & Certified Medical Assistant

After graduating high school, Jonathan traveled overseas with his family but remained fully engaged in the DC HEAL program—staying in touch with his career coach, completing assignments remotely, and completing his drug test immediately upon return to begin training. Now apprenticing at Whitman-Walker Health as a health information specialist and certified medical assistant, he is also pursuing a nursing degree at Trinity Washington University. Jonathan manages electronic health records, supports patient documentation, and has emerged as a confident leader—representing DC HEAL at events while balancing work, training, and college.

Victoria Brown, Certified Nursing Assistant

Victoria’s experience reflects meaningful growth in a demanding, hands-on clinical environment. As a certified nursing assistant apprentice at Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home, she supports residents with daily care while building the skills to thrive in a fast-paced setting. She became the first DC HEAL apprentice to complete her Related Technical Instruction—an achievement that highlights both her technical progress and growing confidence in delivering quality care. Now on track to advance into a CNA Team Lead role, Victoria plans to continue her journey by pursuing a nursing degree.

Renikka Robinson, Certified Nursing Assistant

As a CNA apprentice at Forest Hills of DC, she provides care in a skilled nursing and rehabilitation setting where her impact is felt most by the residents she serves. Supervisors note that residents often request her, citing her positive demeanor and compassionate approach. She has adapted to the pace of the environment while building confidence in her skills and her voice—becoming more comfortable contributing to team discussions and advocating for herself and her patients. She plans to continue her education and grow her career in health care.
